Dzerzhinsk is a city in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. It is a wharf on the left bank of the Oka River. It is the second largest city in the region, after Nizhny Novgorod. The population of the city is almost 250 thousand people.
Dzerzhinsk's economy is based on industry. It comprises 46 enterprises of various sizes. More than 36 thousand people are employed in this industry, which is exactly one third of the entire able-bodied population of the city. The majority of the entire industry is manufacturing (chemical, rubber and plastic products, light industry).
The largest enterprises of Dzerzhinsk include Korund, Sibur-Neftekhim, Aviabor, Dzerzhinsk Plexiglas, Khimsintez and others. In addition, the city manufactures electrical products, laboratory hydrogen generators, cosmetics, and building materials.
The scientific potential of the city is tied exclusively to developments in the field of chemistry and defence production.
The Palace of Culture of Chemists in Dzerzhinsk is the largest theatre and concert venue in Nizhny Novgorod Region, which opened to the public in the spring of 1959.
All the most important city events take place in the hall: solemn ceremonies, awarding of certificates, meetings with famous cultural figures, competitions of modern and classical dance, tours of theatre groups, festivals and concerts of various formats.
The Palace of Culture became the basis of the composition and architectural centre for the first time in the history of urban environment development. The authorship of the project belongs to the Soviet architect Vladimir Yemelyanov. The Chemists' Palace is made in the traditions of Russian architecture and is recognised as a monument of architecture and urban planning.
"Chaika" is a Scandinavian-style country hotel on the bank of the Oka River. The hotel is located in a pine park in the recreation area of the elite village of Zhelnino.
